New Mittens and Hat for the Boy Child

Well of course after seeing the mittens I made for his sister, H was really on me to make him some mittens too. I had some luscious handspun yarn sitting on my bedside table taunting me, so I had to make something out of it. It is a blue, green and yellow alpaca/silk yarn that I attempted to navaho ply for the first time. So it has some funky thick thin chunky monkey bits, but once knit up I think it just gives them a homey handmade look. I like it! I used the pattern in
Handknit Holidays for the convertible mittens. I used the handspun for the hands and thumbs and then some Cascade 220 for the flaps. On the top of the flaps I made i-cording and little loops for buttoning. I used a couple of green buttons to secure the flaps back when necessary. One of the things that I really like about this pattern is that because of the flexibility of the rolled stockinette at the fingertips if you need to you can pull your whole hand out of the top of the mitten with the flap down. This makes them even nicer if you need to really use your whole hand and have these still on as a gauntlet. This yarn is so soft and snuggly when knitted that I think he will really love them. In fact, I have to keep telling him to take them off when we are in the house! lol Once I was done with the mittens, I still had plenty of both types of yarn left so I decided a hat was in order. I just made it up as I went along. I knit enough 2x2 ribbing to be able to have a rollup brim and then just did straight stockinette in stripes for the rest of the hat. To finish off the top of the hat I did another i-cord loop to hang the hat up and to match the mittens. Yeah! All of these items made their debut at a cookout/bonfire that we had at my parent's house last weekend. The menu included crispy blackened bratwursts, hot citrusy cider, many bean baked beans and of course smores. MMMMMM! A good time was had by all.

WOW! Love the Boy Child's mittens! Like the idea too of a Knit Mit Kit Swap - THAT sounds fun.
